Q’enqo

The Archaeological site of Q’enqo are the remains of what was once a sacred place which the Inca Gods like the Sun, the Moon, the Apus and the Pachamama were revered at. Even after the destruction by the Spanish, we can still enjoy amazing rests which represent that this place was a very important one. Just about 4 km from Cusco, and nearby other important Inca sites, Q’enqo still maintains many mysteries around it. As its name traduced says the ‘labyrinth’, makes reference to its underground galleries below its stone structures and its zigzag stone channels, which are one of its main attractions.

Pukapukara

One of the main archaeological precincts near Cusco, because of its high  platform it is denominated as a fortress. Until this day, it’s true purpose remains uncertain. It’s name from quechua means ‘Red fortress’, this is because of the land’s color and the limestone rocks of the buildings that acquire this reddish hue due to the rays of twilight. According to history, the complex served as a bath and a resting place for the Inca.

Tambomachay

Due to its location, it belongs to one of the important centers in the ‘ceques’ or imaginary roots that started from Cusco and served to organize their sanctuaries and important centers. A series of canals, aqueducts and even waterfalls run through the r The purpose of the place  was to provide water to sites around or nearby such as the Inca baths. It consists of a series of aqueducts, canals and waterfalls that run through the terraced rocks. Situated very near from the Timpuc Puquiu natural springs which were channeled through three waterfalls that still flow today. Until today, the site’s purpose is uncertain. It could have been a military outpost guarding the approaches to Cusco or as imperial baths. Also, some people believed it served with a religious aim, since almost all the sacred water fountains in the main Incan temples like Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu. Sources reach Tambomachay, one of the nine ceques built along the Road of Antisuyu. Sacrifices were made too.

Kusilluchayoq

The denominated ‘Temple of the Monkeys’, Kusilluchayoq is an archaeological site situated near Balconcillo. Without a doubt, this is a place with a high archeological value, such as many other sites like Machu Picchu; its hallways and galleries are connected between them. Its carved walls used to house niches, and  observe water piles remains. A great feline sculpture, probably a puma. For its cercany to the Moon Temple this area it’s still used to realice magic or religious rituals, as the offerings shows.

Temple of the Moon

The perfect spot to connect yourself with nature It is a big hill with two caves inside it. The caves contain alters and cracks in the walls that let in sunlight or more significantly moonlight that strikes the alters on certain nights. Above the cave, the temple lights up completely on full moon, especially on the nights closer to the winter solstice. This is thanks to the small opening. Many people leave their offerings to the Moon Goddess, particularly couples who want to get pregnant.
