Tour Information
Why you should take our tour to the Tambopata National Reserve

An eco-tour to Tambopata Amazon Peru will put you in direct contact with the unique climate and ecology of the southern jungles of Peru. Our Tambopata adventure takes place in the Tambopata National Reserve, which is located in the region of Madre de Dios. It’s the home of hundreds of exotic plant species. Experts estimate that around 1700 species of native plants exist at Tambopata, with new species being discovered every year.

Also, the Tambopata National Reserve is home to several animal species like jaguars, the Peruvian spider monkey, ocelots and the giant otter. However, one of the most representative species is the Macaw. Hundreds of macaws are usually seen feeding at the clay licks of the region. These places are usually located near the Tambopata River and are open to tourism. It’s worth noting that the Tambopata Jungles also stands out because of its numerous oxbow lakes, which are home to hundreds of native species of animals and plants.

If you want to experience the lush rainforests of Peru, enroll in one of the most complete multi day tours in Tambopata!

Itinerary

Our Tambopata Peru Tour combines different kinds of activities. Most of them are designed to put the tourist in contact with the biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon. However, some of them are oriented to outdoor activities like zip lines or canopy. Our travel package consists primarily of day tours designed for enjoying the nature of the region.

Day 1Puerto Maldonado - Monkey Island

Our staff will receive you at the airport or the bus terminal of the city of Puerto Maldonado. Then you will go to our offices for registration. Then we will take a boat ride from the Capitanía port to our Amazon Lodge Tambopata. The trip takes around 1 hour and constitutes a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the Madre de Dios River and the Tambopata Amazon. Once in our lodge, you will be placed in your room, where you will be able to take a quick rest and unpack your things.

After a short welcome, we will start our Amazon adventure by doing a two hour walk in the jungle. You will be accompanied by our guides. During the tour you will appreciate the exotic flora and fauna of the Tambopata National Reserve. Parrots, macaws, snakes and butterflies are visible among the treetops of the amazon rainforest. Then, we will return to the lodge where you will have a quick lunch.

After lunch, we will visit Monkey Island. There you will see some of the native species of monkeys that live in the Amazon Jungle. Most noteworthy are the Spider monkeys, Red Howler Monkeys and the Brown Capuchin Monkeys. We will visit Monkey Island before afternoon because the monkeys are more active during the day.

In the afternoon we will take a boat trip on the Madre de Dios River. There you will be able to explore the Amazon Rainforest and enjoy its unique views. Also, some species of animals can be spotted on the shores of the Madre de Dios River. Capybaras, and sometimes caimans, can be seen taking a nap or swimming.

At the end of the day, you will be served a typical dinner at the lodge and prepare for the next day. Taking a night walk accompanied by our tour guides is optional.

Day 2Canopy – Lake Sandoval

You will go to the canopy tower, with a height of 40 meters. There you will enjoy the staggering views of the rainforest. Afterwards, we will go back to the Tambopata National Reserve to visit Sandoval Lake.

On arrival, we will explore the lake by boat. Sandoval Lake stands out for its clear and pristine waters. Sandoval Lake is also a sanctuary to different animal species, like the giant otter, the black caiman, macaws, parrots, turtles, monkeys and cranes. Some of these animals are endangered species.

After a traditional lunch, we will explore the shores of the Sandoval Lake. In the afternoon it’s possible to see flocks of macaws and other birds arriving at the lake. They come there to settle down and sleep. Near the lake, there is an observation tower maintained by a local Tambopata Research Center.

At the end of the day, we will return to the lodge to have dinner.

Day 3Outdoor activities

After breakfast, we will go for a short walk into the jungle. If you want, you can participate in outdoor activities like zip lining and tree- climbing. However, if you prefer more calm activities, you can go fishing at the Tambopata River.

Afterwards, we will return to the lodge to have lunch. In the afternoon we will visit a family of indigenous natives. We will share time with them to observe their lifestyle and, if you want, buy some souvenirs.

Then we will go back to the lodge to have dinner.

Day 4La Torre Macaw Clay Lick – Puerto Maldonado

We will have to wake up early at 5 am. Then we will go by boat to a nearby clay formation called Colpa La Torre. Flocks of macaws go to this place to eat clay. It’s believed that eating clay helps these animals to neutralize toxins in their daily diets. Due to this unusual behaviour, Colpa La Torre provides a perfect spot to observe macaws in their natural environment.

Then, we will go back to the lodge to have lunch and pack our things. After having lunch we will go back to Puerto Maldonado to visit the local market. If you want, you can try some of the traditional juices made with native fruits.

At this point, we will say goodbye. Our staff will take you to the bus terminal or the airport, depending on your choice. If you want to explore more of the wonders Peru has to offer, taking a short tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas is a good option.
